Investing in Recreation and Parks: A Smart Path to Better Health
The National Physical Activity Plan’s Community Recreation, Fitness, and Parks (CRFP) sector emphasizes the importance of expanding public parks and recreational programs to promote physical activity. With over 108,000 outdoor and 65,000 indoor facilities across the U.S., studies show that access to well-maintained parks, varied activities, and community-based programs leads to higher levels of physical activity and improved health. However, current funding for these facilities is minimal compared to healthcare costs, which far exceed park investments. Doubling park funding could reduce healthcare expenses, benefiting individuals and communities.
The CRFP sector’s strategies focus on enhancing recreation programs, improving facility access, fostering diverse leadership, and advocating for sustainable funding. By strengthening these efforts, we can build healthier, more active communities.
