Swimming Lessons
LEARN TO SWIM
The Airway Heights Parks & Recreation swim lesson program promotes health and wellness, water safety, and allows individuals of all ages and skill levels to find their place in the water and build from there.
Lessons are taught by our trained instructors, in a fun, safe learning environment, following the nationally recognized American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim program with an updated addition of the USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash Initiative. Lessons are approximately 25-minutes and run in 2 to 8 week sessions. Lesson fees are based on the number of lessons per session.
6 Months to 3 YEARS OLD:
Parent – Tot Splash n’ Play Class
Have fun playing and exploring the water with your little one while learning about water safety and basic swimming principles through songs and games.

3 to 5 years old:
LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN
Tiny Tots 1
The start of an aquatic adventure without the parent. Swimmers build confidence by learning to blow bubbles, float and use arm and leg movements with assistance.
Tiny Tots 2
Build on the aquatic adventure encouraging individual confidence. Swimmers will work on breath control and being comfortable while completely submerged.
6 to 12 years old:
THE BENEFITS ARE ENDLESS
Level 1: Get Wet!
Jumping in with confidence and happy to get our faces wet! Swimmers travel on their front and back for 15 feet with assistance and use training aids with ease.
Level 2: Build Confidence!
Working on recovery positions and swimming up to 30 feet. Improving our treading water techniques and progressing in the front and back crawl without assistance.
Level 3: Be Brave!
Step in the lap pool and begin swimming 25 yards of front crawl with side breaths. Independently swimming 10 yards of backstroke and comfortably recovering from change of position in and under the water while easing in to breaststroke.
Level 4: Go Further!
Build on Level 3 skills now swimming 50 yards of front crawl and confident with 15 yards of butterfly, and backstroke, and recover with breaststroke.
Private / Semi Private Swim Lessons
Swimmers of all abilities ages 3 and up, including adults, can benefit from one-on-one lessons. These 30 minute classes are tailored to the students’ swimming needs, which can range from timid or first time swimmers to those interested in fitness swimming.
ADULT Lessons: It’s never to late to Learn
Private Swim Lessons for Adults (16+) are perfect for those ready to improve the confidence in the water, and introduce themselves to the health benefits of swimming. Adult Swim Lessons are scheduled on a instructor availability basis.
L1: The Basics – Learn basic swimming strokes and skills needed to feel confident and safe, in and around the water.
L2: Improve Skills and Strokes – Gain proficiency in swimming skills and the six basic strokes.
L3: Swim for Fitness – Refine swimming techniques and turns to build endurance and optimize swimming for fitness.
Private lessons participants are registered directly with the AH Aquatics team at (509) 570-7290. Registration are on a first come, first serve basis through our wait-list program.
This program is limited to up to 3 consecutive swim sessions. Semi-Private lessons are available for up to 3 swimmers.
SWIM TESTING AND REGISTRATION
It is important to register at the safest swimming level. This can sometimes be difficult to assess based on lesson description. The AH Aquatics team can help. Schedule a brief swim test and receive a recommendation for what level to register.

Water X
Water Exercise “Water X” classes are led our wonderful Aquatics Staff and designed to keep you moving along with the beat the music. Classes are low impact but high intensity aerobics activity where no swimming skills are needed. Instructors will direct you to perform movements that use natural resistance and buoyancy of the water against your body to provide a wide variety of conditioning and cardiovascular activity. Designed for all skill levels, these movements will improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone, and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees, and back. Each instructor has their own plan for the day and may implement a piece of equipment like a swim noodle, aqua jogger belt, webbed glove, or even a kickboard.
All Water Exercise Classes require membership or purchase of a day pass, and are drop in participation – no registration necessary.
RIVERCISE
This class will utilize the assistive and resistive properties of the river’s current to focus on core and body strength, balance, and posture. Walking forward, backward, and laterally along with lunges, squat,s and stationary exercises will be used to advance these objectives.

SHALLOW WATER
This class is perfect for you if you’re looking to improve your cardiovascular endurance and strength while using the water’s unique support to ease the strain on muscles and joints. This is a fun-tastic opportunity for ages 13 and up to enjoy the pool, workout in a social environment, and improve on individual health and wellness.

DEEP WATER
This water fitness program is held in the deep well of the pool and provides a no-impact, but challenging, cardiovascular workout. Participants may use flotation belts, styrofoam barbells, or noodles to perform a variety of motions including water walking and running, abdominal work, and toning exercises. This class is designed to burn fat and increase cardiovascular fitness, range of motion, and muscle tone.

WATER-X COMBO
Combo Class is a full blend shallow water exercises in the warm-water rec pool, deep water workouts in the lap pool, and Rivercise in the Lazy River. This class targets cardiovascular endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility using water resistance, flotation devices, and the river’s current for a full-body, low-impact workout.

Certified Lifeguard Training
LIFEGUARD TRAINING COURSE
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course provides the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Course participants will receive training in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be issued a certificate valid for 2 years.
This is a blended learning course format which includes required completion of online education prior to classroom and in-water components. Participants must attend all class days of training totaling approximately 20 hours.
Participants must be able to successfully demonstrate the following prerequisite swimming skills. This evaluation is completed on the first day and includes the following skills:
Swim 200m continuously with breath control.
2–minute tread using legs only
Surface dive 9ft to retrieve a 10lbs brick, swim the brick 20 meters, and exit the pool without the use of ladder or pool steps within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
SPRING COURSE
COURSE DATES: 4/25-4/27

COURSE CLASS SCHEDULE:
DAY 1 3:00-9:00pm Swim testing & Intro Lifeguard class work.
DAY 2 9:00-6:00pm Water rescues, class work, First Aid/CPR/AED.
Day 3 9:00am-3:00pm In-Water practicals & final exam.
AGES: Must be at least 15 by the last day of class.
COST: $285
Participants must attend all 3 days of training totaling approximately 20 hours, and will be required to complete online course work prior to the start of class.
SPRING BREAK JR LIFEGUARD CLINIC
Junior Lifeguard program teaches youth the water safety skills used by lifeguards everyday, as well as develops the mental and physical elements needed to one day become a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard.
- Learn and practice in-water rescue techniques using real Lifeguarding equipment.
- Be introduced to basic First Aid skills, CPR, and AED use.
- Shadow a Lifeguard on stand, and practice safe water monitoring.
- Must Pass Level 4 Swim Lesson or LG Swim Test

LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE
NEXT LEVEL LIFEGUARDING
The Airway Heights Parks & Recreation Aquatics Team will be conducting a Lifeguard Instructor Course that will train and certify participants to be American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR/AED Instructors. Certified LGI’s will be qualified to conduct Lifeguard Training Courses. The LGI certification is perfect for those seeking Aquatic Leadership positions, and wanting to take their lifeguarding knowledge to the next level.
This is a blended learning course format which includes required completion of online education prior to classroom and in-water components. Participants must attend all class days of training totaling approximately 20 hours.
No LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR IS SCHEDULED FOR January through April.
