Director’s Letter – Winter/ Spring 25

Dear Community Members,

As we kick off a new year filled with exciting programs and activities, we thrilled to share what’s in store for you at Airway Heights Parks & Recreation! Whether you’re looking to try something new or reconnect with old favorites, we have something for everyone. From expanded fitness and water exercise classes to family-friendly events and outdoor leagues, our schedule is packed with ways to bring our community together.

As we all know exercising for health is important and the new year is the time we take on the mindset of getting (or staying) healthy and active, but exercise isn’t just about staying fit—it’s also about supporting a healthier, happier community. Studies have shown that staying active can reduce the risk of developing conditions like dementia, which currently affects over 55 million people worldwide. In fact, recent research reveals that even moderate exercise, like working out once or twice a week, can help lower the chances of developing cognitive decline by up to 13%. This is especially important as we age and the risk of dementia increases. The good news is that you don’t have to exercise every day to see these benefits. Just a couple of sessions per week can make a real difference.

What’s even better is that you don’t need to commit to daily workouts to reap the benefits. Whether you’re busy with family, work, or other commitments, exercising a couple of times a week can still make a significant impact on your health and well-being. With new trails and pathways around town, as well as a variety of exercise classes here at the Rec Center, there’s never been a better time to get moving. Regular activity can also help reduce your risk of over 200 other diseases, further improving your overall quality of life.

I encourage you to explore the many opportunities we offer to stay active and engaged. Whether you’re attending a class, joining a league, or simply enjoying a walk in the park, taking time for your health can make a big difference.

Here’s to a year filled with movement, connection, and joy. I look forward to seeing you stay active, healthy, and happy.

Thank you,

J.C. Kennedy
