ADVENTURE HEIGHTS SEEKS SUMMER FUN

Another summer has wrapped for our Adventure Heights Day Camp. This season was challenged by what has become seasonal smoke and haze, and an extended wave of the extreme heat. Amidst it all we are thankful that we were still able to provide a fun and exciting environment for our participants.

One main reason we were able to provide this program with memorable experiences and activities that kept our participants engaged, is a grant that we received from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).  OSPI received federal funding and partnered with the Washington Recreation and Park Association (WRPA) and the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) to administer a Summer Experiences and Enrichment for Kids (SEEK) grant opportunity.  The focus of the grant was to expand opportunities to get kids outdoors and help families with more affordable recreational opportunities.  Airway Heights Parks and Recreation received $50,000 in grant funding that enabled us to provide significantly reduced registration fees for families, and also supported the purchase of equipment and materials to expand the program activities. Even though this year’s funding wasn’t made available until later in the summer, we made the most of it in August filling the program roster and exploring all day fun and excitement with field trips, games, and more. This year’s funding also helped us set ourselves and future participants up for great summer programming to come.

This Fall, applications can be submitted for a second round of funding for next summer allowing us to plan and market for next summer and open this opportunity to more of the families that we can serve next summer.

We would like to thank all of the families that entrusted us with the care of their children this summer and look forward to being able to offer a better program that more families will be able to take advantage of next summer.
